AI Fluency: The Strategic Competency for Finance Leaders

As AI takes on more of Finance's analytical work, competitive advantage shifts from producing information to questioning, interpreting, and acting on it. AI fluency is the strategic competency CFOs and finance professionals need to capture value, manage risk, and lead transformation.

Artificial intelligence is taking on an increasing share of the analytical activities that once consumed a significant portion of Finance teams' time. Consolidating information, identifying variances, generating forecasts, summarizing documents, comparing scenarios, or supporting the financial close are already tasks that can be performed quickly and accurately via automation and AI agents integrated into enterprise platforms.

In this context, competitive advantage no longer lies in producing accurate information, but in the ability to question it, interpret it, and use it to make better decisions. As technology's analytical capabilities expand, human judgment doesn't diminish. It becomes more valuable as humans and machine complement each other.

This shift requires CFOs and professionals in Finance areas such as FP&A, Accounting, Risk, and Controls to develop AI fluency by understanding how this technology enhances processes, decision-making, risk management, and operating models.

In practice, AI fluency is the ability to work alongside intelligent systems, knowing when to trust their recommendations, when to challenge them, and how to leverage them to improve business performance while ensuring that AI adoption is secure, scalable, and aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.

The Demand for New Skills

Numerous studies identify artificial intelligence as one of the most important competencies for the future of finance careers. However, competitive advantage lies in the combination of financial expertise, proficiency with AI-powered tools, and fundamentally human skills such as critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

A 2026 report on Finance Trends shows that most finance leaders already consider AI, automation, and data analytics capabilities a priority for their teams. The study highlights an important shift: the discussion has moved beyond whether artificial intelligence will be used in the finance function to how organizations can develop people capable of creating value with it.

This perspective is reinforced by another report on the future of Finance, which identifies workforce readiness as one of the key factors in realizing returns on AI investments. In other words, the challenge is no longer technological.

AI Fluency Is Not a Technical Skill

There is a common misconception that developing AI capabilities means learning to code or becoming a data science expert. In reality, successful organizations create a shared understanding of artificial intelligence across their leadership teams.

This means understanding fundamental concepts, recognizing the capabilities and limitations of AI models, using generative AI tools securely, designing more effective interactions with intelligent agents, and incorporating governance principles into the day-to-day use of the technology.

Just as no CFO needs an in-depth understanding of ERP architecture to lead a finance transformation, leaders do not need to master algorithms to lead an AI-driven organization. At the same time, simply deploying AI agents across the function without proper training and development of the workforce will create small pockets of productivity, but will not create transformational results.

What they do need is a clear understanding of how this technology is changing the way organizations make decisions, operate, and compete.

The Risk of Adopting AI Without Preparation

Organizations that master AI transformation understand a fundamental truth: technology is only as valuable as the people deploying it. As AI becomes embedded across every business function, AI literacy is no longer a nice-to-have skill for specialists. It's a foundational competency that every leader and team member must develop.

Companies that invest in comprehensive AI education, not just technical training but strategic understanding, gain the agility to question AI outputs, interpret results in business context, and make decisions grounded in both human judgment and machine intelligence. This literacy gap separates market leaders from followers.

AI literacy means understanding the technology's limitations and knowing how to recognize when an output may contain bias, identify inconsistencies, validate sources, protect confidential information, and apply governance criteria before any recommendation is incorporated into the decision-making process. Models will change and evolve, and your workforce will need the tools and knowledge to leverage these new technologies in their day-to-day.

The real competitive edge in the AI era belongs to organizations that create continuous learning cultures. Forward-thinking enterprises don't treat AI training as a one-time initiative but as an integrated part of their operating system.

When companies invest in developing their people's AI capabilities alongside deploying AI tools and systems, they create a multiplier effect: teams become better decision-makers, accelerate innovation, and build organizational resilience. The companies winning today aren't just those with the best AI technology. They're the ones with the most AI-literate, empowered workforce.
