Collaboration Between University, Quantum Rise, and Industry Drives Innovation in Patient Care
Quantum Rise and UC San Diego's Rady School of Management collaborated on the Agentic Nurse Solution — a capstone project applying agentic AI to help nurses identify patient clinical deterioration earlier and make better clinical decisions.
Artificial intelligence innovation becomes even more relevant when applied to solving everyday business challenges. With this purpose, Quantum Rise and the Rady School of Management at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) developed the Agentic Nurse Solution project, a Capstone focused on applying agentic AI to support nurses in the early identification of patient clinical deterioration.
The project brought together students from different disciplines, technology specialists, mentors, and healthcare professionals in a collaborative initiative that combined academic research, hands-on experience, and industry expertise.
Over approximately three months, participants went through every stage of product development, from understanding the business problem and interviewing nurses to defining requirements, designing the solution architecture, developing the prototype, and conducting validation cycles with end users.
Throughout the project, the team worked within a continuous collaboration model, with weekly progress meetings, review and validation sessions, and an ongoing exchange of knowledge among students, mentors, and subject matter experts.
In addition to the technical development, participants had the opportunity to experience the importance of user-centered design, understanding that healthcare solutions must balance technological innovation, ease of use, and alignment with clinical workflows.
Throughout the project, the group demonstrated the value of experiential learning and multidisciplinary collaboration in preparing professionals to address complex challenges.
As a result of this work, the Agentic Nurse was developed, an agentic AI-based solution capable of consolidating patient clinical information, including:
- monitoring the evolution of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS);
- identifying early signs of clinical deterioration;
- generating proactive alerts;
- providing contextual information through a conversational interface.
Acting as an intelligent assistant for nursing professionals, the solution contributed to their daily work by:
- enhancing situational awareness;
- reducing cognitive workload;
- supporting decision-making during critical moments, while always keeping healthcare professionals at the center of patient care.
One of the project's key differentiators was the active participation of nurses and clinical specialists throughout the entire development process. Feedback collected during validation sessions guided important improvements to the solution, including simplifying the user experience, refining navigation flows, enhancing the presentation of clinical information, and optimizing the recommendations generated by the AI.
This approach reinforced one of the fundamental principles of applied artificial intelligence projects in healthcare: using technology to meet the real needs of the professionals who will use it in their daily work.
The Agentic Nurse Capstone represents an example of the potential of collaboration between academia, industry, and the healthcare sector to accelerate innovation by generating knowledge, developing talent, and exploring new applications of artificial intelligence to support professionals, optimize processes, and contribute to safer and more efficient patient care.
